My guest today is Samuel Moyn. Moyn is the Chancellor Kent Professor of Law and History at Yale University, previously the Henry R. Luce Professor of Jurisprudence at Yale Law School and professor of history at Yale University, which he joined in July 2017. Moyn’s previous works, such as Humane, Not Enough, and Liberalism Against Itself, highlight his diversity as a thinker.
Gerontocracy is distinct from Moyn’s previous work and focuses on the role of class and age. Far from expressing distaste or dislike of the old, Moyn’s argument rests upon the centralisation of power from a specific class. There is not simply a hoarding of wealth; there is an inability for many older people to live the retirement that they may desire. Indeed, for Moyn, we suffer from an impoverishment of imagination surrounding age.
